Excellence Evidence Librarian 10

Librarian

On Monday I had Librarian with Samantha L, Samantha W, Monique, Xanthe and Isabella.

First we went to the library and got a few books and a couple of bean bags. Once we had got these we walked down to the junior area.

When we got there Samantha W, Monique and Xanthe sat down on the deck while the rest of us went around asking little kids if they wanted to listen to a story. We found a few little kids so we directed them over to the deck.

When everyone was there Samantha W started reading. She was reading a Barbie book. All the little kids were really respectful and everyone enjoyed the story.

When we were done we returned the books and bean bags to the library and went out to lunch. (What I did).

I showed Respect by listening to the reader.

I showed leadership by role modelling what I wanted others to do.

Te Reo, Term 4 2016

Te Reo

Blog Post Title : Te Reo, Term 4 2016.

This term we have been learning all about the Marae. We have learned that…….

  • The Marae is an important focal point for the community.
  • The Marae is a place where tradition and customs can be carried out.
  • The Marae is a place where people can express their values with dignity.
  • There are many kawa ( protocols) that prevail on the marae.
  • Marae kawa (protocols) can differ between maraes and iwi.

We have focused on some key concepts when doing this learning.
These are listed and explained in the table below.

Concept
Definition -
give the meaning of these concepts in your own words.
Tikanga
The procedures of a Marae
Pōwhiri
A welcoming ceremony to the Manuhiri
Tangata whenua
Are the local people
Manuhiri
Visitors to a Marae
TÅ«rangawaewae
A home base on a Marae. It also includes rights and obligations
Whanaungatanga
A relationship/belonging
Manaakitanga
Care and respect for other people
Aroha
Love

See this video for an explanation of the roles and responsibilities of people on a marae.

Something I would like to learn more about the marae is how you can go visit one.

Parliament

This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.

Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:

  • The prime minister sits 4 seats to the right of the speaker
  • There are different parties in parliament
  • The difference between democracy and dictatorship

Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship

C.A.R.E: My progress so far

The CARE award that I am working towards is Gold.

The one area of CARE that I am doing best in is Excellence because I only need 3 more highlights till I've got everything highlighted off in that column.

The one area of CARE that I need to work harder in is Community because I have the least amount of highlights in the column.

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits: Integrity, resilience, active thinker, trustworthy, goal focused and motivational.

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am Extended Abstract because I can show the CARE values independently.

Water Cycle information report

The water cycle

The water cycle is a process that water goes through between land, sea and the atmosphere. In the water cycle the water gets recycled so Earth never receives more water. The water cycle can come in three different states liquid, gas and solid. The steps of the water cycle are evaporation, condensation, precipitation and runoff/ground - water.

Evaporation
Evaporation is water from rivers, lakes and the ocean turning into a gas and ascending into the atmosphere; This occurs when the sun heats the water. This happens when the sun's energy breaks the bond that holds liquid water’s molecules together. In winter this doesn’t take place as often as the sun is not out. In summer [especially in hotter places like the islands] the air gets really thick. This is because the water vapor is rising into the atmosphere. Once the water vapor is in the atmosphere it becomes condensation.

Condensation/Precipitation
Condensation is groups of water vapor forming clouds. Condensation happens because of temperatures changing. Condensation is a very important because without clouds there would be no precipitation. Precipitation is when the water falls back to land. Precipitation can come in four different states rain, hail, snow and sleet. The amount of precipitation varies in different parts of the world. Once the water has fallen back to land runoff begins.

Runoff/Groundwater
Runoff is when the water makes it’s way back to the ocean by going through rivers, streams and creeks. Most of the water from the runoff flows over the land but a small percentage infiltrates through the land which becomes groundwater. Groundwater is the water you find underground. There are two stages of groundwater. The first is water storage and the second is groundwater flow.

Overall the water cycle is a crucial resource for survival. All of the steps [evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff and groundwater] are needed equally and we should treasure the water we have.

Kapa haka, Cultural Festival

On Tuesday I had the cultural festival for Kapa Haka.

First we had a practice at the arena in the afternoon. We practiced our transitions onto the stage and where we are going to sit and stand. We had 9 minutes to do this.

On the night we met at the grass patch outside the arena. While we were waiting the girls had to put on headbands, lipstick and the year 8 girls had to put on the feather earrings. Once we had done this we entered the arena and sat down in our spots.

We got to watch most of the performances as we were the last group to perform. When it was time for us to perform we walked quietly to backstage and formed our lines. By this time everyone was getting nervous. All of a sudden it was time to go on.

The performance went really well and we all enjoyed it.

I showed Excellence by representing Oaklands school positively.

I showed leadership by being a role model to the younger students.

Here is a video of our performance

Kapa Haka

On Friday I had Kapa Haka. We started early so we would have more time to practice.

First I walked respectfully down to the hall and took my shoes off in the hall foyer. Then I entered the hall respectfully and sat down in my spot. When everyone had arrived we started warming up our voices.

Once we had done this we went through our cultural festival performance.

The first time was a little bit quiet but we improved from there.

We stopped a few times just to fix little things. When the performance was just about perfect Mr Brown asked the senior staff (principal and deputy principal) to come watch.

We sang as loud as we could and did the poi and raku really well. The staff thought we did really well.

After this we were allowed to leave.

I showed Respect by transitioning to the hall and back quietly.

I showed leadership by doing the actions up the front.

Evaluating author's purpose

Evaluating author's purpose

In reading we have been learning to make decisions about the usefulness of the text for the purpose, by using a variety of criteria to evaluate.

We read a range of texts and  evaluated them against four key criteria.
These were.....

- Readability
- Accuracy
- Relevance
- Quality of information/ language.

My CARE progress

CARE

I have done a check of my CARE progress so far this year.

I am proud of my progress this year as I have reached my Bronze.

I am quite far away from my Silver as I have just got my Bronze but I'm trying really hard to get more ticks.

The area of CARE that I need to try harder in is Community because I need to offer to help a little bit more.

To achieve my BRONZE/SILVER award quicker I need to show all the CARE values and work hard in my learning.

The one thing that I can do to improve my progress in CARE is finish my SML every week and focus on my learning.

Music

W.A.L.T: I can describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place

Over the past 7 weeks I have been learning to describe the characteristics of music from songs of a different time and place.

I can describe these characteristics in a piece of music…
Form- The structure of the song or how it's put together.
Rhythm- A strong or regular repeated pattern.
Melody- The part of the song that gets stuck in your head.
Harmony- Major harmony = happy song, Minor song = sad song.
Timbre- What makes the song unique.

Here is an example of my learning

First I walked respectfully down to the hall and took my shoes off in the foyer. I entered the hall and sat down in my spot.

When everyone had arrived we started warming up our voices. The song we sang was He Honere. Once we had sung that we sang Pa Mai. The person that usually starts the song wasn't there so the year 8 girls had to do it. We didn't do it well so the year 4 girls got a turn. Mr Brown said if they did it better we had to do shadow poi for the rest of the practice. They ended up doing it better but then the year 8 boys wanted a go starting so they got a go as well. Again they were louder. When we had finished doing that song we ran through our Cultural festival routine.

The first song is Hareuia then Tahurihuri and finally our school song Taitapu with the Haka at the end. In Tahurihuri we did shadow poi because Mr Brown stuck to his word.

After this we practiced our performance for the open day. The two songs we're doing are He Honere and Taitapu. We ran through these a couple of times then we were allowed to go. (What I did).

I showed Respect by listening to the commands.

I showed leadership by being resilient when we had to start Pa Mai.

Student Led Conference Reflection

The things I enjoyed most about my SLC was sharing my AsTTle test with my parents because achieved good scores and I was really proud of it.

The thing that went really well was sharing it because all the links worked and everything went smoothly.

I was most challenged by the integrated learning slide because we haven't done much about leadership lately so I had to refresh my memory.

Next time when I do my SLC the thing I would do differently is add more detail to my integrated learning slide and my PE and Koru games slide.

Technology on the bus

Every Tuesday the seniors go on a bis to Lincoln Primary School for technology.

On the bus I showed the CARE values by......

Community: Being aware of others when we got on the bus by not putting my hand out to block people and not shoving others out of the way.

Active Thinking: I was one of the first on so I went to the back so when the last people got on they wouldn't have to walk all the way to the back of the bus.

Respect: I was talking quietly to the person next to me and I thanked the driver both times I got off.

Excellence: I showed all the CARE values and represented Oaklands School positively. (What I did and the values I showed).

I showed leadership by role modelling what I wanted others to do.

Excellence Evidence Kapa Haka 3

Kapa Haka

On Friday I had Kapa Haka.

First I walked respectfully down to the hall and took my shoes off in the foyer. Next I entered the hall and sat quietly in my spot. When everyone had arrived we started singing our school song Taitapu. We are working on singing louder and with more pride.

After we had gone through the song a couple more times we split off into groups and they were short poi, long poi, raku and the Haka. I had to go outside and practice long poi with the rest of the year 8 girls.

When we were  outside we practiced the poi. We made a routine and everyone got to have a say in what they thought should be in it as long as it was appropriate.

When we had got the routine sorted we practiced as a group. We realised then that we were all changing to the next action at different times so we practiced when we were going to change. When we were doing this we all got confused because there was no beat. To solve the problem we asked Matua Rihari to come outside and play the guitar.

After that we went back inside and practiced transitions until Kapa Haka was over. (What I did).

I showed Excellence because I was being resilient in the poi when we were all changing at different times.

I showed Leadership by helping others in the poi

Reason with linear proportions

National standard one: Combine simple proportions to work out what parts the whole is made up in a unit of 10 like 3 yellow with 7 blue, 5 yellow with 5 blue, 4 yellow with 6 blue. Say what the fraction and percentage of each stack is for yellow and blue.

National standard two: Combine proportions to work out what parts the whole is made up of using non-multiple of 10 like 8 yellow :5 blue :4 white with 11 yellow :11 blue :11 white (19:16:15 and 38% :32% :30%).

Here is a screenshot of my progress on the IXL activities.

To figure this out I used cross checking. To do this you multiply the numerator and denominator on both the fractions like a cross as shown in example. If the numbers match at the end they are a proportion

My Short Story

Short stories

For this piece of writing I have focusing on my vocabulary and punctuation. I have been learning to:

Use a large productive vocabulary across the curriculum (Year 9/10)

Use a wide range of punctuation appropriately and with increasing accuracy. (Year 9/10)

The pieces of my writing that are highlighted green are where I have shown my vocabulary and punctuation goal.

Here is my story The Final

The rain was pelting down on me like daggers. It was a freezing showery day at the Lincoln Netball courts. The courts were as wet and slippery as an ice skating rink, the hoops are a tap dripping with water. The smell of hot pies is wafting through the courts, making me drool. There are people milling around aimlessly like sheep in a field. The butterflies in my stomach are a lion roaring and surging as I wait to take the court. It is the final,  Halswell A (my team) versus Rolleston A.

“Hands in” says Ellie one of our captains.”

Team on 3, 1, 2, 3.”

“TEAM!” we all cheer.

Finally it’s time to start. We take the court. While we wait I play with my bib (GS). I am so nervous. The whistle blows and the game begins. Players are running around as if it was war but I suppose it is as two teams are battling it out to win.

I see the ball speeding through the air, it looks like it’s going 1,000 kilometres an hour. I brace myself for the impact of the ball. Just as I’m about to catch the ball, my player (the Goal Keep on the opposition) appears in front of me and trips me up. I tumble down to the ground and hear a crack. It’s sounds like a tree branch snapping off a tree. The pain shoots through my leg. I hear people yelling encouragement so I attempt to get up. As I  get up pain shoots through my leg again like a lightening bolt. I tumble back down again. The pain is extreme. I dig deep and with pure determination I get up. The whistle blows and the game starts again. The ball goes flying down the court to the other end. While I wait for it to come back down I tenderly stretch my ankle and it still really hurts.

All of a sudden the ball is back down my end. I drive for the ball in pain. I catch it this time and quickly pass to the Goal Attack in the circle. She catches it swiftly and shoots it. It falls through the hoop. Relief rushes through me as we have scored the first goal. The ball goes back to centre and it’s our pass. Again the ball is coming down the court. It is as fast as a cheetah. All of the players are rushing towards it but thankfully one of our players comes up with the ball. She throws the ball at me with the strength of ten men. I catch it and shoot it before the defence is there. It goes in. The crowd whoops and cheers as the score is 2-0 to us.  The ball volleys up and down the court. The whistle blows for the end of the quarter. That quarter has flown by I think as I walk off the court.

Once I’m off the court I grab a drink and as I bend down, out of the corner of my eye I see my ankle and it’s bigger than a whale.  I realise that my ankle is still really sore. I tell my coach. I get it strapped with more tape than a mummy. When my ankle finished getting strapped I took the court with the rest of my teammates ready for the second quarter.

We win the game 40-35!

Excellence Evidence Kapa Haka 1

Kapa Haka

On Friday I had Kapa Haka.

First I walked respectfully down to the hall and took my shoes off. Then I entered the hall and sat down in my spot. While we were waiting for everyone to arrive we sang He Honere.

When everyone had arrived then we started. We started off singing Taitapu (our school song) with the Haka afterwards. After that we practiced Tahurihuri. The year 4 girls are doing Raku sticks, year 5, 6 and 7 girls are doing short poi and the year 8 girls are doing long poi.

We got to practice being in our spot and I found out that we have to do the poi front and center. We practiced this for the rest of the time. (What I did).

I showed Excellence by trying my hardest.

I showed leadership by role modelling what I wanted others to do.

When we found a couple more people we sat down an Samantha W started reading. The book was about love between animals. When she was finished Samantha L read a Barbie book. While she was reading it a few more people turned up.

When we were done we returned the books and bean bags. (What I did).

Merit Evidence helping out around the school 1

Helping out around the school/ Bake Sale

On Wednesday we had the bake sale. It is fundraising for the year 8's trip to Wellington at the end of they year. All the year 8's had to bring in a plate of baking if they wanted the money to be taken off their fee.

Around 11 the student leaders had to set up. We brought tables from the class out and set up a station. Then we brought out the food. There was around 15 different plates per table.

When we were finished setting up we got the first class out. Lots of people came and bought things.

We asked the rest of the classes and again there were heaps of people.

Most of the food sold at our table and everyone else's. (What we did).

I showed Community by helping at the table.

Merit Evidence Kapa Haka 5

Kapa Haka

On Friday I had Kapa Haka.

First I walked respectfully down to the hall. I took my shoes off in the hall foyer and waited quietly for the Culture Club to finish. When they finished I went into the hall and sat down in my spot.

When everyone had arrived we got started. The song we sang first was the school song Taitapu. We went through this song a couple of times focusing on being in time with our actions.

Next we sang Hareuia. We went through this a few times as well. We focused on stepping in time. When we had got it we moved on to Tahurihuri which is the song with the poi's.

The boys went into the hall foyer to practice the Haka while the girls did the poi. since I'm a year 8 I get to do long poi. I practiced all the actions focusing on Butterfly and Over head.

After this it was time to go. (What we did).

I showed Respect and Excellence because I walked down to the hall respectfully and tried my best in the poi.

Merit Evidence Librarian 4

Librarian

On Monday I had Librarian with Samantha L.

First we went to the library and got 2 Barbie books ( Barbie a Pet Vet and a Fashion Fairy tale) and 3 bean bags.

Afterwards we walked down to the juniors and put the beanbags on the deck. Then we went and asked some juniors if they wanted to read a book. We struggled at first to find some but then we asked a whole group and they wanted to.

Next we read the book. I read Barbie a Pet Vet first. It was really fun reading it but it was also hard because the sun was in  my eyes and all the juniors wanted to see the pictures. Then Samantha read. She read Barbie a Fashion Fairy tale.

Once we finished reading we took the books and beanbags back to the library and went and enjoyed the rest of our lunch time. (What I did)

I showed all the C.A.R.E values because I did my duty on time and for the required time and I tried my hardest with it.

I can describe the structure of a Short Story

Something I have learnt about the structure of a Short Story is that the problem comes into the story faster.

After reading some short stories two things I will remember when I write my own short story are to add a setting and a problem/solution.

Comparing leaders exposition

Conclusion

Overall I think Queen Elizabeth II is a better leader because she motivates people all over the world through the media and when she visits their country. Furthermore she comes up with ideas to make her country a better place for the people of England and tourists that come to visit.

Term 1 Integrated Learning - Leadership

We have been learning about what makes a good leader

Here is a link to the Leadership modelling book

We identified that good leaders show 6 main character traits. These are Integrity, Goal focused, Trustworthy, Active Thinker, Resilient and Motivational.

The Leadership trait I think I show the most is Goal focused because when I set a goal I work actively to achieve it.

The Leadership trait I would most like to develop is Motivational because I don't try and motivate people and I would like to change that.

Something new I have learnt about Leadership is the 6 leadership traits actually link into each other.

The SOLO level that I reached during this unit of learning is Extended Abstract because I can evaluate the effectiveness of a leader.

My next step in learning about Leadership is to apply everything that I have learnt about leadership to my own Leadership role.

Find and validate data measures eg Mean, Median, Mode and Range from appropriate displays

This is my progress in Mean, Median, Mode and Range.

My next step is to have a teacher conference and get a new goal.

Improvisation reflection

Improvisation techniques that I have used successfully are
-Always say yes
- Use past knowledge
- Be specific

Improvisation techniques that I would like to yes better/more are
- Don't be nervous
- Get behind the story

The thing I enjoyed the most was playing the games because they were really fun and taught me a lot about Improvisation.

The thing I found the most difficult was finding Improvisation techniques in the videos because you had to think about it and come up with them because it didn't tell you straight away.
